Garretson Ambulance Q & A:
Q: Do the EMTs with Garretson Ambulance stay with the ambulance 24 hours a day? Where do they come from when they are dispatched?
A: Some larger cities, including Sioux Falls, have EMTs in their ambulances at all times. In Garretson, our EMTs do not stay in the ambulance 24 hours a day, because we do not have enough calls to require that. However, we do have 2 assigned staff on call 24 hours a day, so there is always a crew scheduled to respond at all times. We use a mix of paid and volunteer shifts, depending on the time and day. For paid shifts, when we tend to run more calls, staff are required to be closer to the ambulance so they can respond quicker, typically either in our office, or from their job or home if they are nearby. For volunteer shifts, employees typically take call from home, which may be a little further away if they live outside of town, as long as they can safely respond within the timeframe required by the county ordinance that we are licensed under.
