Garretson Commercial Club Meeting Minutes
April 10th, 2024, Regular Meeting at The Gulch
Those in attendance: Carrie Moritz, Garrick Moritz, Leah Jones, John Brinkman, Bruce Brown, Kimberly Konda, Paetyn Dreckman, Sarah Beahler, Steve Carlson, Mary Carlson, Guy Johnson, Ron Luke.
12:01 pm Carrie Moritz called the meeting to order and requested everyone in attendance to introduce themselves.
Secretary’s Report – Paetyn provided minutes from the March meeting. No questions surrounding the report. No action taken as quorum was not present.
Treasurer’s Report – Kris Johnson provided report in packets. No questions surrounding the report. No action taken as quorum was not present.
Old Business:
- State Park Signage – Palisades State Park entrance has officially moved to 256th street and planning for grand opening hopefully sometime in May. Carrie discussed the sizing and pricing options for the vinyl banner placed in the right of way across from the street from the new park entrance directing park goes to Garretson. Options currently are 4×8 or 6×12 with 4×8 priced around $450 and 6×12 about $780. This price included install of the sign and framing. Carrie mentioned Luke reached out to Brandon Lumber for pricing if the Commercial Club was to build the wood frame. John advised that the landowner, Orn Sorensen, is on board and signed an agreement for the sign to be placed but sizing would need to be run by him for final approval. No action was taken as quorum was not present.
- Phone Book Progress (Carrie) – Carrie presented a draft of the phonebook. Sam Williamson with Alliance was able to provide details for the inside pages and design work started with Performance Press. Planning for an end of April completion.
- RASDak – Carrie advised she and Kris Frek met with Casey Abbott who is leading planning for the event. Casey is planning 250-300 total riders to begin in Garretson the morning of Sunday June 2nd. So far there are 200 riders registered from 23 states and 3 providences. Guy advised the school has plans in place for riders to stay over night in the gym and have access to showers and space for mandatory meeting Saturday night. The Legion will be hosting a breakfast the morning of June 2nd. The plan is to have riders take off from Main Avenue and east on 4th Street pending street construction start date. Kris is working on music and entertainment Saturday night and possibly a meal option for riders as well as gauging interest on an e-bike give away. Riders will return to Garretson Friday June 7th throughout the day.
- 2024 Membership List – A list was provided in packets of all businesses with confirmed memberships. Currently at 61 members. Carrie confirmed pay structure with Mary on a few that still needed to be invoiced that were noticed in the old phonebook draft.
- Jesse James Days Schedule – Carrie went over pricing for mailer that goes out each year. Performance Press advised 1500 mailers, 1300 of which are mailed out and 200 are provided to be handed out. Pricing for mailer and EDM with Performance Press would be $431.86. No action was taken as there were not enough board members present for a quorum. The group discussed events list and delegated tasks to confirm with vendors on select events. Carrie advised The Garretson City Council approved the closure of Main Street from 3rd to 4th around 5:00 pm Friday evening, and 4th street to north of The Treasure Chest Saturday evening. Carrie also discussed placement of port-o-potties and received the ok from city council to place on the alley next the “the old Exercise Place” off Main Avenue. Anna Jones with the City of Garretson will plan for the Self-Guided Hikes and Nature Scavenger Hunt listed for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Sarah with the Library said they are not able to have the ZooMobile this year, but she would work with staff and plan an event in its place. Kris Frerk is working on the Art Trail updates for 2024 and Palisades Art Gallery has confirmed local artist gallery to be open all weekend. No work on Wine Tastings at Humble Hill yet, but Carrie will follow up. Paetyn confirmed Garretson Pool will be open pending weather. The board will follow up with restaurants for specials. Leroy planning for bean bag tournament with Aced Cornhole Friday night and Street Dance Saturday night. Angie Nussbaum has confirmed the Car Show in the school parking lot. Phil Baker has given the Commercial Club first pick. Carrie will reach out to the board for a decision. Bruce confirmed the Museum will have a fundraising and selling a food item Friday night. Guy confirmed model trains will be in the school commons. Guy will touch base with Alysha on FFA food stand Friday night and fishing derby for Sunday. Carrie will reach out to Tad Heitkamp on the Fire Department doing the pancake feed, blood drive, and shuttle rides. Carrie confirmed the Jesse James Road Race for Saturday morning. Carrie advised Laurie will be hosting the vendor fair with table fees at $15. Ron and John are willing to put the parade together for one more year. John has confirmed a fly over to take place at start of parade. Kimberly will plan on specials at The Treasure Chest. Carrie will ask BDA about a dunk tank again this year. Carrie to reach out to Family Treats Ice Cream, and drivers for the Toddler Trains. Kris Johnson to reach out to Kringen’s on horse rides Inflatables with Dakota Entertainment quote came back at $3,216.16 for 6 inflatables and 8 attendants. Carrie discussed wrist band price at $10 with a $30 family maximum. No quorum so no action was taken. Leah offered to check with Zion Church on a burger booth. Garrick advised Silver Creek Mavericks will be having a meeting later this month on coming back to Garretson. Discussion around them performing Friday night or remain a Saturday event. No action taken as quorum not present. Luke will lead the Stagecoach Drawing. John to confirm baseball game schedule. Carrie will reach out to Luke on the crafts sponsored by Palisades State Park.
Carrie will be sending items to vote via email to board members.
Leah gave a quick run through on advertising for events with Dakota News Now but plans to be back for the May meeting to go over in more detail.
