Devils Gulch

Experience the legend of Jesse James

In a wooded area just east of Split Rock Park, the legend of the Outlaw Jesse James takes form. In the depths of the red quartzite canyons, a branch of the Split Rock Creek winds through an 18-foot gorge where, in 1876, Jesse James' horse jumped and helped him escape the posse.

Several hiking trails are available, including the Wiese Hiking Trail, Devils Falls Crossbridge, and the ever-famous jump-bridge, where James allegedly jumped the gorge. Brochures showcasing specific overlooks, native plants, and the waterfalls and canyons of Devils Gulch are available in the Visitor's Center.

Visit the Visitor's Center between Memorial Day and Labor Day to learn more about the history of the park, see historical photos, and purchase souvenirs!
